FAQs about the Math Olympiad
Here is some information based on our experience during our inaugural year in 2024. We will hold an informational session about the Math Olympiad to answer additional questions.
Background for the test and registration:
When and where is the test?
Thursday, March 20, 2025, from 4:30pm – 5:45pm in the Waynewood Elementary School cafeteria. The test starts and ends at the same time for all participants.
What is the format of the test?
The Math Kangaroo exam is a 75-minute multiple-choice test for students in grades 1-12. There are 24 questions for students in grades 1-4 and 30 questions for students in grades 5 and higher. Participants is provided with their own test packet, and a separate answer sheet that they will complete using a pencil
and then submit for scoring.
Who qualifies to take the Math Kangaroo Exam?
Every student qualifies who can read and work independently at his/her school grade level. As a by invitation site, we have registration limits and are initially prioritizing registration for WWES students in grades 1 - 6. If you receive an inquiry from another family in the community, please direct them to math@waynewoodpta.org.
What about my KG or 1st grader who may not be able to read word problems or sit for a 75 min test?
Stay tuned for more information about a Junior Math Olympiad hosted separately from the official competition. The test will not require reading and will be 45 minutes. The date and time have not been set; however, we expect it will be after the Math Kangaroo competition. Your student is welcome to participate in both competitions if you wish.
Who creates the and selects the Math Kangaroo questions?
The International Math Kangaroo Committee, AKSF (aksf.org) selects the questions.
What is the points value of the questions?:
Each question has a point value. 1/3 of questions are 3 points each, 1/3 – 4 points each, 1/3 – 5 points each. The sum of earned points is the student’s result. There are no points taken away for answering questions incorrectly.
Is the test difficult?
This is an international competition, so while several questions follow grade standards, participants should expect the test to be challenging and may find that they do not know how to solve all of the problems. No points are taken away for answering questions incorrectly. Proctors are PTA volunteers and cannot
offer any assistance or clarification during the test.
How can my student prepare for the Olympiad?
Math Kangaroos has several online resources and sample problems online. Once your child is registered, you can enjoy free Math Kangaroo video solutions and access full questions and solutions sets with 50%
off. Instructions on how to find the discount code HERE.
Day of logistics:
When should registrants arrive if the test starts at 4:30pm?
We prefer that all participating students report directly to the cafeteria at dismissal vs going home and
returning. We will provide a small after school snack and will need time to organize students by grade and distribute the test. We will work with the front office to ensure teachers are aware of which students are participating in the Olympiad.
Can I stay in the cafeteria for the test?
Only test participants and registered PTA volunteers who are signed up to proctor the test or help set up will be permitted to be inside the cafeteria during the test.
When can I pick up my student?
We will be sending out a form to confirm how your child will be picked up after the test, and your child will be released according to your instructions. The test will end within 75 min, and we will do our best to start on time. If we start late, we will send an email to all parents. Some students finish their tests quickly. To minimize distractions, we typically ask students to stay seated for the final 20 min of the test even if they have finished.
